Однак у, здавалося б, звичайних спогадах Анатолія Романюка про пережите вдумливий читач знайде для себе набагато більше, а саме: неоціненні свідчення автора про важливі історичні події 20-го і початку 21-го століть, активним учасником яких він був і залишається дотепер. Завдяки непересічній особистості автора ми маємо можливість по-новому глянути на ці події й оцінити їх значення як з історичного погляду, так і з перспективи на майбутнє.

A happy childhood in enchanting, pastoral Bukovina is shattered in early life by his father’s death. Forced to leave behind his homeland in 1940 at age 16, he beats the odds to successfully complete his secondary education. He miraculously survives the turmoil of World War II, the ordeal of imprisonment and the erring life of a clandestine, to witness the collapse of Nazi Germany from Munich. Separated from his mother and sister by war, it will take a fifteen-year search to locate and reconnect with them. He pursues university studies in Germany and Belgium, finds a home in Africa as a young demographer, and then in the USA as a research associate in demography at Princeton University. He settles for good in Canada where he pursues an academic career and occupies senior positions in the Federal Bureau of Statistics. The fall of the iron curtain reunites him with his homelands of Ukraine and Romania, to which he returns regularly to rekindle family and cultural links. Such are the milestones of the life, as seen in the context of contemporary history events and recounted in this volume.

Автор воспоминаний «Крутыми тропами к свободе» Роман Мац родился на извечной украинской земле Ярославщине, оказавшейся после Второй мировой войны за пределами Украины. Подростком он добровольно вступил в УПА, чтобы защитить семью, родственников и все украинское население Закерзонья от порабощения и физического уничтожения. В нашей мемуаристике есть очень мало изданий, принадлежащих перу его тогдашних сверстников, в которых так честно, искренне, без приукрашиваний и апологетики рассказывается о героической повстанческой борьбе в 40–50-х гг. ХХ века на самых западных территориях украинских земель.

The author, Roman Mac, describes his childhood during the Polish rule in Western Ukraine and its Soviet occupation from 1939 to 1941. The village he lived in, Molodych of the Yaroslav region, was very close to the German occupation of Poland. He witnessed Soviet border guard officers at night secretly exiling innocent, illiterate peasants to Siberia, in order to grow in their ranks for discovering “enemies of the state and Communism”. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in 1941 and rapidly occupied Ukraine, life was not any better for most of the people. Gestapo sharpshooters practiced their skills by using farmers working far on the fields as their targets, and after each successful hit, joyfully sang arias from Wagner’s operas. Any one who helped fleeing Soviet prisoners of war, or helped Jews hiding in local forests, faced firing squads. In 1944, the advancing Soviet Army riding in Detroit made trucks, and carrying American canned food in their sacks, displayed slogans – “It is not a secret we will fight American Capitalism”. Everywhere Soviet political educators pinned posters showing the North American Continent and above it a mascular hand with the words, “We will destroy American Imperialism”. Behind the frontline followed special troops whose mission was to stir unrest between ethnic groups which eventually resulted in a self-destructing war. Soon, the new Polish Communist Regime started massive arrests of young men and women for no other reason except for just being of Ukrainian nationality. The author further describes how the Ukrainian underground movement came to his area to defend innocent villagers and at the same time offered an opportunity for young people to join them in order to escape imprisonement or to perish in Gulag type camps. Detail by detail, he decribes the tactics used to round up local Communist collaborators, the ingenious communication network the underground movement developed without any technical support, and the very well designed hidden bunkers which housed sick and disabled fellow participants or operational planning units. The most amazing description is about sleeping at night in the snow at a temperature of 40 degrees below zero. Polish Communists succeeded in conquering territories from the Ukrainian Underground Army, UPA, by deporting in 1947 some half a million people from their native land to the newly Polish aquired Eastern Prussia, formerly a part of Germany. But even after that, there still were UPA units oprating in their areas until 1960, or a few of them followed their friends and relatives to former Eastern Prussia. The author was sent by his superior to go with his people to their new land and find means to secretly legalize many members of the underground into Polish society. To some extent he achieved that task, but when the Polish secret Police followed his tracks, he joined a group of his friends and in 1948 they walked from Poland through Chechoslovakia to West Germany. The trip lasted some 3 months and was totally successful.

До таких героїв належить Зеновія Ґонтарська-Макєйчук, спомини якої про пере¬жите вражають своєю щирістю і неординарністю. Ставши в юні роки зв'язковою ОУН, вона виконувала важливі доручення; після арешту польськими репресивними органами пройшла через пекло тортур і поневірянь і втратила здоров 'я. Але віра в Бога, у торжество ідеалів, за які вона боролася, допомогла вирватися з комуністичного "раю" і стати вільною. Книжка призначена для всіх, хто цікавиться історією українського визвольного руху.

Unfortunately, many residence of Ukraine are convinced that the independence of Ukraine just happened as if it fell upon Ukraine from the sky, and not as a result of a prolonged and exhausting struggle that lasted many generations and involved numerous individuals. Many of these individuals laid down everything they had at the altar of their country, their well being and even their life. Zenovia Gontars'ka-Makeychuk is one of these individuals. Her memoirs are unordinary frank. Having become a courier for the UNA, she was carrying out important assignments. After being arrested by the repressive organs of the Polish government she suffered torture and loss of health. But her faith in God and the supremacy of the ideals for which she was fighting for allowed her to escape from the communist “heaven” and become free. The publication is intended for all who are interested in Ukraine’s struggle for independence.
